Five Fuel-Efficient Driving Habits

These are all relatively easy to integrate into your driving routine–some are as simple as having a lighter foot on the pedals. Here’s the full list of tips on how to improve your fuel economy:

• Accelerate softly: Pressing down hard on the gas pedal is a major drain on your fuel tank, so try applying the accelerator gently instead. If you slowly bring your vehicle up to 10 mph from a standstill rather than hammering on the gas, it can result in significant fuel savings.
• Coast to a stop: By the same token, hammering down on the brake pedal and screeching to a halt is another way to waste fuel. If it’s safe to do so, try coasting to a stop for as long as you can before gently pressing down on the brake pedal. If you’re asking yourself “how can you save fuel when driving on hills,” coasting downhill as long as it’s safe is an easy solution.
• Plan ahead for traffic: Another drain on fuel is sitting in stop-and-go traffic and constantly switching between the gas and brake pedals. This also puts unnecessary stress on your car’s drivetrain. Try leaving 15 minutes early or mapping out a more efficient route to your destination rather than going straight through downtown gridlock.
• Avoid high speeds: The faster you drive, the more fuel your vehicle consumes. Try to keep your speed between 55 and 66 mph on the highway (as long as you’re following the speed limit) to save a bit of gas.
• Use AC, but only on the highway: Your car uses fuel to power the air conditioning, so try to use it as sparingly as possible when you’re driving around town. However, when you’re on the highway, using the AC is actually more efficient than keeping the windows rolled down! When your windows are all open, your car’s drag coefficient increases, which in turn decreases its fuel efficiency.
